Eve Owen – Don’t Let The Ink Dry

I’ll preface this by saying I’m not normally a fan of singer/songwriters but I gave this a shot based on the reviews I was seeing on various platforms (Apple Music, Spotify. talking as if i read loads of different music magazines, i dont). Of course people sing and write their own songs, I just can’t get into the acoustic line of this genre, it feels same-y and boring. This seems a bit different. The album starts with ‘Tudor’, which is a slow build driven by percussion and floating guitars. Eve’s voice is soft with an edge, if that can make any sense, and I think it’s great. Considering her sound and age it’s hard not to dub Gordon as the UK’s answer to Maggie rogers, with vocals double-tracked and mini-epic instrumentals behind it, there’s a lot of vulnerability between the vocals which I like. Another immediate standout is ‘She Says’, which hooked from the first melody. Beautifully heartbreaking and pleasantly mature is how I’d describe it. The album carries the same tone throughout which is consistent but I’d also like something more gritty, but that’s just me. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend if you are looking for a beautiful voice on a rainy day.
